Compact Wine opener Vertical Lever Corkscrew Wine Bottle Opener with Foil Cutter & Extra Screw
$ 7.13
Opens bottles very quickly and easily, better than any opener I have used. This is the heaviest opener I have had, too, though most of the weight is in the grip of the handle. Most of opener is a hard plastic, except the handle, guide rod, screw, screw cap, and pins holding it together, but it feels sturdy and strong. It is designed to stand-up, with a flat edge on the base of the handle. It does do that, but the end is narrow, so it is easily knocked over.It didn’t seem to operate smoothly when I first tested it before opening a bottle, so I used teflon lubricant on all the joints, the guide rod and the channels. After that, it worked very smoothly. I have had to do that with other openers of this style, too.One issue I have found with this style of opener, this opener included, is that the cap holding the screw in place tends to loosen a bit each time it is used, so I need to check/tighten it every several or so bottles.These openers also sometimes have issues with plastic and composite corks, but the vast majority of wine I drink uses natural cork, so I have not yet experienced that with this opener. For those rarities, I have my “wine angel” – the style with handles that raise up as the screw goes into the cork when this style does not work. I like my wine angel, but this style opens bottles far quicker and easier.The included foil cutter is just a cheap plastic one, which does work, but those types are not designed to last. However, I did not buy this for the cutter, which I don’t need.Overall, after about a dozen bottles opened, I am impressed with how well it works.
