Description Difficult-to-find pair of brass gas/electric sconces This difficult-to-find pair of brass gas/electric sconces is referred to as a 1 3. That’s one gas light facing upward and three electric lights facing downward. This pair hails from c. 1900. Lighting designers decided to combine gas and electric arms on the same fixture. Electricity was unreliable and gas was dependable, so this combination was considered state-of-the-art! We chose not to convert the gas burner on each sconce, so they’re inoperable but represent the sconces’ age. The brass is pretty clean but is not lacquered; the sconces will darken in time and create a rich patina. A wall switch will be needed to operate these sconces. Each of the six vintage glass shades is signed Gillinder and dated Oct. 1, 1912 on the fitter ring. We have a seventh matching Gillinder shade that we will include with this order as a spare, at no additional charge. These would be perfect in a bathroom over his and her mirrors, in a foyer, library, bedroom, den, hallway, stairwell, etc. They measure 15 1/2″ high with the shades by 16 1/4″ wide by 9″ deep. Both sconces are rewired with ground wires added to bring them up to today’s electric codes.
